What is Asherman Syndrome?
Asherman Syndrome is the presence of scar tissue within the uterus.
Symptoms can include reduced menstrual flow, pain with menstruation and/or difficulty getting pregnant.
The majority of cases (over 95%) are associated with infections or complications from surgical procedures involving the pregnant, or recently pregnant, uterus.
Please see the WHRIA website for more information.
How is Asherman Syndrome diagnosed?
Women reporting a history of uterine surgery and/or symptoms of Asherman Syndrome need to be referred for a hysteroscopy, or saline infusion sonography in order for diagnosis to occur.
It is important for General Practitioners and other referring doctors to be aware that Asherman Syndrome is not apparent on a transvaginal ultrasound.
